Questions to Consider
Common Questions - Hawaii
Is laundry service available at Kalani?
Kalani provides a one-day laundry service for $10/load, for up to 6 lbs/load. This is a cost that is paid directly to Kalani by the Students when the service takes place.
Is the 200 HR training the initial training for all prospective yoga teachers?
Yes, the 200 HR is he first program that all prospective teachers attend. There are opportunities for teachers to continue on with advanced programming thereafter. Yogacara currently only offers the 200 HR training program as we feel that the initial training is most crucial, and often sets the standards for that teacher as time progresses.
When you complete our 200 HR program you will be certified to teach Hatha & Vinyasa Classes. Specific programs such as Yin or Restorative are continuing education programs that you will take after this initial training.
Is there free time to visit the local area?
There is lots of information to cover in a 200hr Yoga Teacher Training program, yet we know how important it is for downtime and of course to see the beautiful area that you will be in. We have designed the program that includes some time to visit the area. We suggest that if you want to do a more detailed tour of the area, you arrive a few days before or after the program. This can be arranged directly with Kalani.
Can I arrange for other activities during my stay?
Kalani is located about a 20 minute drive away from the nearest village (Pahoa) and it encourages guests to bring what they need, as transportation into town is not always easily available unless guests have their own car. Toiletries, snacks, etc. are available for purchase in the Kalani gift shop. Kalani also offers Sunday excursions to a local farmers market which guests can attend for $15/person if they wish to catch a ride.
What is the weather like at Kalani?
Hilo features a tropical rainforest climate, with substantial rainfall throughout the course of the year. Hilo’s location on the eastern side of the island of Hawaii, makes it the third wettest designated city in the United States. Monthly mean temperatures range from 71.4 °F (21.9 °C) in January to 76.4 °F (24.7 °C) in August. We recommend that you pack for warmer temperatures, capris, light pants and t-shirts and depending on the time of year a sweater or light coat for the evenings. You will have free time as well, so a bathing suit and sunscreen are recommended.
I have problems sleeping, who do I have to share a room with?
All students are required to indicate sleeping behaviours or irregular patterns (ie. restless sleepers, snoring etc) when completing the application form. We do our best to accommodate sleeping behaviours that match or compliment each other in order to ensure you have a good nights sleep, every night. We recommend if you are concerned about your sleeping arrangement that you get your request in early for double occupancy rooms in order to limit any disruption while you sleep.
Are my accommodations and meals included in my Program Fees?
Yes, your accommodations and all meals are included with the cost of your program fees. Accommodation requests are on a first come first serve basis. All initial applicants will be issued double-occupancy rooms, until those rooms are full. After that, triple occupancy applies. The cost does not vary.
Is airfare included and booked on my behalf?
No, airfare is not included in the fees. Due to the departure locations of all the varying Students, we do not include airfare in the fees of the Yoga Teacher Training. All bookings are made by the Student directly.
The closest international airport is Hilo International Airport. We suggest you research flights early from your area to fly to and from Hilo, Hawaii, as your fees DO INCLUDE land transport from Hilo Airport on November 9th, 2013 and return on December 2nd, 2013.

I have special dietary needs, are they able be accomodated?
Yes, with advance notice at the time of registration, we will try to arrange to have appropriate meals prepared for you. The Chef on-site will advise what they are able to do and best accommodate your request. We cannot guarantee all requests, but we always to our best. When applying, please provide detailed information about your specific dietary needs (vegan, vegetarian, gluten free) when registering.
I understand that Yoga Alliance mandates 180 of the 200 hours must be allocated to in-class contact hours. How many in-class hours does your program offer?
In our 200 Hour program we provide a minimum of 220 in-class, contact hours. We feel the minimum set by Yoga Alliance is too limited for students to graduate from a program and feel comfortable with hands on teaching right away. Always question a program that does the minimum amount of class hours, with a class of 20 + and are charging relatively high fees.
When I leave your teacher training program, will I be equipped with all the tools to teach community classes?
Absolutley! Rest-assured that our program is not just a cookie-cutter program designed to get students in & out the door as quickly as we can. Our focus is you, the student, and the student becoming the teacher. Your teaching will be a direct reflection of our program and our intention is based on providing you with all the tools you need to succeed. We will have failed our students if we have provided them with anything less.
WIll I receive a T2202 Education Slip for this program?
No, for this program you will receive an official receipt for all payments received, however you will not receive a T2202 slip at the end of the year. Based on our current tuition structure, we are not required to be registered with PCTIA and therefore do not provide the T2202 slips. The official receipt we provide can be used for income tax purposes against your income earned. Should you need to apply for a BC Student Loan, PCTIA programs are the only ones that can offer that additional benefit. What we offer in lieu is a very manageable, no fee, payment plan to assist ALL students who join the program.
Unique Benefits of Our Programming
Our Unique Benefits
- Our pricing is truly all inclusive. The program cost is the total for the entire program & all of the components (tuition, course materials, accommodation, meals, airport transport from Hilo, Airport other etc.). Airfare is the only item not included, as it is not practical to make airfare arrangements for all the attending students. Please note that if you arrive at Kona airport, the Shuttle Transport is not available to you. Please ensure your arrival and departure points are from Hilo International Airport.
- Payment Plans for total costs are available to all students, at no additional cost.
- Our program consists of 210-215 hours of in session programming. The mandate by Yoga Alliance is that during a teacher training there must be a minimum of 180 contact hours (in session) & 20 non-contact hours (home assignments etc.). You will find that most programs will abide by the minimum requirements. Our programming stresses that the basic 200 hours is not enough time to provide teachers with essential hands-on teaching, and therefore we choose to provide additional hours in the program.
- Our Application Fee is the lowest in the community. The cost of the application fee reflects the hours that go into processing an application. There is no inflated pricing passed on to the prospective student.
- The locations for our trainings are sacred, beautiful & nurturing environments.
- Our program classes are kept to a maximum of 18 students, never more. It is unfair to both the teachers & the students to attempt to fill classes with higher numbers as both the intenion & quality decrease.
- Our program includes Kirtan; a wonderful experience of this ancient art.
- Our program includes mini-workshops: Yin Yoga, Chakras, Pranayama, Nutrition & other specific components.
- Students will have direct access to the Lead Teachers each day of the program, outside of the teaching hours. They are there to welcome you with open arms as you need guidance through the program.
Meet our Teachers, Janet Ward & Siobhan Keely

Lead Teacher, E-RYT, Senior Lead Teacher
When I was twelve years old my Mom signed us up for "mother and daughter" yoga classes over in the school gymnasium. A little later I had my first conscious experience of some kind of 'oneness' doing yoga at home with Kareen Zebroff's TV show. Kareen's book "The ABC of Yoga" was always open on our living room floor and we did try every pose from A-Z.

RYT, Anatomy Facilitator, Assistant Asana Facilitator
I cannot pin point exactly what brought me to yoga, but I know I wanted to feel more relaxed and open and hoped yoga would help me do that. It did. I had been practising yoga for less than a year when I decided to pursue teacher training, mostly to deepen my practice while on my mat and when out in the real world. I completed my 200 hour certificate right here at Yogacara, and it was the exact kick in the pants start I needed to set foot on my quest for living life more simply and living life with less – less stress, less need to be right, less “stuff”. Do I accomplish this every day? No, but yoga is a constant reminder of how I can. And once I figured out how yoga grounds me and brings me back to NOW, I couldn’t wait to show others. I LOVE teaching yoga. I love watching students grow and learn and expand, both in body and soul. I love what the students teach me about trust and openness. I love that no matter how tired I am or if life is dragging her heels, the students ALWAYS give me energy and a sense of joy.
As and Anatomy Facilitator on the Yoga Teacher Training program, I will help you get down to the basics of muscles and bones, ligaments and tendons, and how to apply this knowledge to the poses of yoga. The subject of anatomy can be overwhelming and is a topic that can be studied for an indefinite amount of time. It is my goal to take away the that sense of bewilderment and instead create an excitement to learn more. Knowing even just basic anatomy will help you move forward in your own practice as well as help your students grow and stay safe in theirs.
As an Assistant Asana Facilitator, I will ensure that you are carefully guided through each Asana taught, in such a way that it may be broken down, clearly taught and modified for a variety of students. No student will leave the training without a full comprehension of teaching Asana and sequencing Asana. We will spend many hours together within this part of the curriculum doing hands on training and inter-teaching within the group.
Yoga has been such a blessing in my life in so many ways, I cannot wait to join you on your own journey of discovering where yoga will lead YOU. The divine spark within me sees and honours the divine spark within you.
